Natural Wood in an Edgewater Kitchen and Bathroom
A Chicago single family renovation reworking the kitchen and primary bathroom to improve design, layout efficiency, storage, and everyday usability.
Located in Chicago’s Edgewater neighborhood near the Bryn Mawr Historic District, this project focused on two of the most frequently used spaces in the home: the kitchen and the primary bathroom. Both areas were redesigned to function more efficiently while introducing custom cabinetry, updated finishes, and practical storage solutions.
The renovation resulted in a streamlined layout, durable materials, geometric tile patterns, and thoughtful design decisions that support daily routines while maintaining a cohesive aesthetic across both rooms.
Project Overview
Location: Edgewater, Chicago
Project Type: Kitchen and primary bathroom renovation
Home Type: Single family home
Scope: Kitchen design-build, bathroom design-build, layout planning, custom cabinetry design, and finish selections
This project elevated the home with a sense of calm and warmth, ensuring the character of the home shone through.
In the kitchen, soft sage cabinetry, warm wood accents, and matte brass finishes bring a sense of quiet luxury. The space is bright and clean, but not sterile, thanks to thoughtful materials and patterns, like the geometric backsplash, open shelving in the corner of the kitchen, and light fixtures that mix metals.
The bathroom follows suit with handcrafted tile and marble details that feel elevated yet easy. A built-in shower niche framed in stone adds a custom touch, while the soft green tile keeps the space feeling light and spa-like.
Together, these spaces strike a perfect balance—tailored and timeless.
Kitchen Layout and Design
The kitchen redesign focused on improving circulation and making better use of available storage.
A floating island anchors the room and provides additional preparation space while maintaining open movement through the kitchen.
Perimeter cabinetry introduces a sage tone that contrasts with lighter countertop and backsplash materials. This contrast helps ground the kitchen visually while keeping the space feeling bright.
The backsplash continues behind open shelving and wraps around the window, creating a continuous surface that connects the kitchen’s working areas.
Custom Cabinetry and Storage
Several storage solutions were integrated to address common kitchen challenges:
- Accessible corner storage systems to utilize blind cabinet areas
- Pull-out trash and recycling storage
- Vertical dividers for trays and baking sheets
- Drawer organizers for utensils and kitchen tools
- Roll-out shelves for small appliances
- A concealed microwave shelf allows the appliance to remain accessible without occupying valuable counter space.
- Open shelving introduces visual openness within the cabinetry wall while providing easy access to frequently used items.
These elements work together to create a kitchen that feels organized and practical for daily cooking.
Kitchen Materials and Finishes
The material palette balances warmth with durability.
Key elements include:
- Sage green kitchen cabinets
- Natural wood used for the island and shelving
- Light stone countertops
- Full-height geometric tile backsplash extending behind shelving and around the window
- Warm metal hardware
Together these materials create a kitchen that feels grounded yet bright, with subtle contrast and visual depth.
A Calming Primary Bathroom that is Cohesive with the Kitchen
Our bathroom designers completely reconfigured to improve functionality and storage.
Space from an adjacent closet was incorporated into the bathroom footprint, allowing the layout to accommodate a larger vanity and improved circulation through the room.
The redesigned layout includes:
- A double vanity with expanded storage
- A combined tub and shower configuration
- Heated flooring for comfort
- Improved door placement to support better circulation
These changes allow the bathroom to function comfortably for two users while maintaining a calm and uncluttered feel.
Design Choices for the Primary Bathroom
Natural wood cabinetry introduces warmth and texture while maintaining a clean and modern profile. The double sink configuration allows the space to enable multiple people to get ready in the mornings/evenings, at the same time.
Hardware and plumbing fixtures introduce subtle contrast.
The shower/bath area is enclosed by a frameless glass door that keeps the room feeling open while allowing natural light while showering/soaking. The walls feature tile that runs horizontally through the shower and continues behind the vanity wall, helping visually connect the room. The shower design also includes a recessed niche that provides convenient storage for shower products while maintaining a clean wall surface.
Bathroom Materials and Finishes
Key callouts for this bathroom design:
- Custom cabinetry and integrated storage solutions
- Natural wood accents
- Stone countertops
- Textured tile surfaces
- Warm metal fixtures and hardware
- Frameless glass shower enclosure
