A Bold, Memphis-Inspired Bathroom in Lakeview

A custom Chicago bathroom renovation featuring blue cabinetry, layered tile, and a reworked layout

Nestled between the Wellington and Diversey CTA brown line stops in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood, this primary bathroom renovation transforms a penthouse space into a bright, modern retreat, balancing bold design expression with everyday functionality.

The bathroom channels a fresh, Memphis-inspired aesthetic defined by electric-blue cabinetry and modern lines. Textured cabinetry fronts and minimalist hardware keep the look streamlined, while terrazzo flooring and vertical green shower tile introduce natural pattern and warmth. Matte-black fixtures, floating vanities, and geometric lighting round out the space.

Layout + Space Planning

A full gut renovation, the space was designed to maximize flow, improve usability, and introduce a distinct visual identity rooted in color, pattern, and material contrast. A full reconfiguration of the floor plan allowed the bathroom to function more efficiently while feeling more open.

Key improvements include:

  • maximizing usable square footage within the existing footprint
  • improving flow between vanity, shower, and tub
  • aligning fixtures and finishes for a more intuitive layout

Vanity + Custom Cabinetry

The vanity serves as one of the defining elements of the space.

  • Custom cabinetry in a vibrant blue finish introduces bold color and texture

  • Vertical detailing adds pattern and visual depth

  • Cabinetry is positioned along the window wall, allowing natural light to interact with the material

Above, custom mirrors are mounted in front of the windows, creating layered reflections and enhancing the sense of openness while maintaining functionality.

Quartz countertops (Caesarstone) provide a clean, durable surface that balances the expressive cabinetry with a more restrained material.

Shower Design

The shower continues the theme of contrast and pattern layering.

  • Green horizontal tile wraps the lower portion of the walls

  • A graphic, patterned tile defines the upper section

  • Mosaic tile flooring introduces texture and variation underfoot

Fixtures in a darker finish create contrast against the tile, reinforcing the graphic quality of the space.

The result is a shower that feels immersive and architectural—rather than purely utilitarian.

Tub

A freestanding soaking tub is positioned to take advantage of natural light and exterior views, reinforcing the sense of the bathroom as a retreat.

  • Clean, sculptural tub form

  • Floor-mounted filler for a minimal footprint

  • Placement adjacent to windows to enhance openness and light

This area provides a quieter counterpoint to the more expressive vanity and shower zones.

Materials + Finishes

The material palette is intentionally layered, combining bold color with clean, modern surfaces:

  • Blue custom cabinetry as the primary focal point

  • Green and patterned tile combinations within the shower

  • Quartz countertops (Caesarstone) for durability and contrast

  • Terrazzo-style flooring to unify the space with subtle movement

  • Black and metallic accents to define edges and fixtures

Lighting selections introduce sculptural forms that align with the overall aesthetic, reinforcing the balance between function and design.

Fixtures from Kohler and Delta ensure performance while maintaining a cohesive visual language.

Lighting Design

Lighting plays a key role in amplifying the design.

  • Pendant fixtures introduce circular, graphic forms

  • Mirror placement enhances light reflection and depth

  • Layered lighting supports both task and ambient needs

The interaction between mirrors, windows, and lighting creates a space that feels bright and dimensional throughout the day.
