Winnetka Home Remodel | Timeless Design on the North Shore
Classic Architecture Meets Modern Day Living
This interior design, remodel, and furnishings project on Chicago’s North Shore in Winnetka was a lot of fun. Working within the home’s traditional architecture, the design team introduced refined modern elements through curated finishes, architectural detailing, and durable fabric furnishings. Lugbill Designs guided the home room by room, coordinating furnishings, textiles, paint selections, artwork, mirrors, lighting, and styling elements to create stronger continuity across the entire property.
Preservation, While Modernizing
One of the central priorities throughout the project was visual continuity between spaces. Paint selections, furnishings, decorative accents, and textiles were intentionally coordinated so rooms felt connected without becoming repetitive.
Soft neutrals form the foundation of the palette throughout the home, while muted greens, charcoal accents, warm woods, and layered textures introduce variation and depth. Decorative lighting and furnishings help define each room individually while still contributing to the larger visual rhythm of the home.
The project also preserved select architectural elements and stained wood finishes, allowing portions of the home’s original character to remain intact rather than replacing everything uniformly.

Formal Living Room: Thoughtful Design with an Emphasis on the Home’s Architecture
The formal living room balances structure with comfort through layered seating, soft upholstery, tailored textiles, and restrained contrast.
Neutral furnishings establish a calm backdrop, while deeper green accents and darker decorative elements add dimension throughout the space. Sculptural furnishings and rounded forms soften the room visually, helping it feel refined without becoming rigid.
Artwork, lighting, and styling accessories were intentionally scaled to suit the room’s larger proportions while maintaining a relaxed atmosphere appropriate for both entertaining and daily use.
An Inviting Living Room Filled with Warmth
The family living room was designed as a more casual gathering space centered around comfort and flexibility.
Layered rugs, upholstered seating, decorative pillows, and softer textures create warmth while maintaining alignment with the home’s overall palette. Muted greens and tonal neutrals introduce subtle contrast without overwhelming the architectural envelope of the room.
Decorative accessories and styling were intentionally restrained, allowing the furnishings and layered materials to carry the visual interest naturally.
A Dining Room Perfect for the Everyday and Special Moments
The dining room introduces slightly richer contrast while still remaining connected to the surrounding spaces. Darker tones and layered textures create a more intimate atmosphere appropriate for entertaining and larger gatherings.
The furnishings were selected to feel substantial without becoming visually heavy, while lighting and artwork help define the room vertically and reinforce the home’s tailored aesthetic.
Paint selections throughout the dining room also contribute to the room’s quieter, more grounded tone.
The Primary Bedroom
The primary bedroom was designed to feel calm, layered, and restorative. Upholstered furnishings, tonal bedding, decorative pillows, and soft textures create warmth without visual excess.
Muted blue and cocoa-toned accents introduce subtle contrast while maintaining the home’s restrained palette. Decorative lighting and styling elements were selected to reinforce the quieter tone of the room rather than compete with it.
The result is a bedroom that feels comfortable and highly personal while still aligned with the broader aesthetic carried throughout the home.
Paint & Finish Coordination
A comprehensive paint and finish plan played a significant role in tying the home together. Lugbill Designs coordinated room-by-room wall colors, trim finishes, ceiling finishes, and accent applications throughout the residence.
The overall palette focused on:
- warm whites
- soft greiges
- muted taupes
- restrained charcoal accents
- layered neutral transitions
This approach allowed each room to maintain its own atmosphere while still contributing to a larger sense of continuity throughout the home.
Furnishings & Styling
The project included furnishing and styling coordination throughout multiple rooms of the home, including:
- upholstered furniture
- rugs
- decorative pillows
- mirrors
- artwork
- decorative lighting
- accessories
- layered styling installations
The furnishings were selected to balance comfort, scale, and durability while reinforcing the home’s softer architectural palette. Decorative elements were intentionally restrained and layered rather than heavily styled, helping the home feel elevated without becoming overly formal.
